Beijing Capital International Airport

Located on the northeastern side of Beijing 's central district, the Beijing Capital International Airport is about 26 kms from the city center. Its three terminals are designated as follows: Terminal 1 for Hainan Airlines; Terminal 2 for Skyteam , China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines; and Terminal 3 for Star Alliance, Shanghai Airlines, Air China and Oneworld.

Terminal 3 began operations only in March 2008. It is widely regarded as the largest airport building in the world and is expected to provide much-needed support to what is already the busiest airport in the country, and just in time for the Beijing Olympics. According to estimates, the airport will have the capacity to handle 90 million passengers a year by 2012.

Beijing Capital International Airport has a host of facilities for the world traveler, including money changers, ATM machines and a host of restaurants.

Tourists usually take taxicabs to head to the city center. Fares cost between ¥70-120. Depending on your time of arrival, you may have to brace yourself for some massive traffic jams en route to the city center.

Tourists may also take the airport shuttle to the city center, which is the cheapest means of travel available, costing around ¥16. There are also four main bus lines servicing various locations.

Line 1 heads south-east to Fangzhuang and operates from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Stops include Baijiazhuang, Dabeiyao, Fangzhuang, Panjiayuan, Liangmoqiao, and Shilhe.

Line 2 heads south-west to Xidan and operates from 7 a.m. until the time of the last available flight. Stops include Xidan, Sanyuanqiao, Dongsishitiao Bridge and Dongzhimen.

Line 3 heads to the city center and other southeast locations. It operates from 7:30 a.m. until the time of the last available flight. Stops include the Beijing Railway Station, Chaoyangmen, Yuyang Hotel, and Yaoboulu.

Line 4 heads to north-west of the city to Gongzhufen and operates from 7 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Stops include Beitaipingzhuan, Gozhufen, the Beijing TV Station, Friendship Hotel and five bridges: Anzhen Bridge, Hangtian Bridge, Jimen Bridge, Madian Bridge and Zizhu Bridge.

Line 5 heads north of the city to Zhongguancun and operates from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Stops include Wangjing, the Asian Games Village , Baofusi Qiao, Xiaying and Xueyuan Bridge .

The Beijing Capital International Airport (6512 8931) opened in 1999 and is a modern efficient airport. Free baggage carts are available and the airport has lockers for passengers to store their baggage. ATMs and foreign exchange machines are in the terminal. The airport is 26 kilometers from the centre of Beijing. Do NOT USE any of the people soliciting taxis and transfers, they will ask you but only use a pre booked transfer, public taxi or airport bus.

Airport Bus
An airport bus is available on the lower level just outside the arrivals area that departs every 15 - 30 minutes. There are five routes as detailed below.

Line 1:Capital Airport;Sanyuan Bridge;Dingzhi Men;Shitiao Bridge;Xi'Dan

Line 2: Capital Airport;International Exhibition Centre;Xibahe;Anzhen Bridge:Madian Bridge;Bei Taipingzhuang;Friendship Hotel;Beijing TV Station;Zizhu Bridge;Hangtian Bridge;Gongzhu Fen.

Line 3: Capital Airport;Yuyang Hotel;Dongda Bridge;Chaoyang Men;Yabao Lu;Beijing Railway Station.

Line 4:Capital Airport;Liangma Bridge;Hujialou;Guomao;Panjiayuan;Shilihe;Fangzhuang

Line 5: Capital Airport;Wangjing;Xiaoying;Yayuncun;Xueyuan Road;Zhongguancun;North end of Wangfujing;Dongsi Art Gallery.

Taxis
Taxis are available on the lower level. Do not use drivers who approach you and only use the taxi line outside the terminal. Your taxi information will be recorded in case of any problems. Make sure the driver puts the meter on. The taxi driver will provide a printed receipt and also a second receipt for the toll road which must also be paid. There is no need to tip taxi drivers. Carry the name of your hotel in Chinese as drivers rarely speak English.
